Marble King Original Operation, St. Marys, WV 1949 - 1958 . Paden City, WV 1958 - Presently in operation. Marble King was chartered and did purchase the successful marble making business from Lawrence E. Alley in 1949. They initially packaged remaining Alley marbles, as well as Peltier marbles before producing marbles on the Alley Machinery. They would soon purchase the Master Glass Machines. Marble King's engineering of the Cat Eye method of production in 1955 helped keep Marble King, as well as some other manufacturers in the marble making business. On January 6, 1958, the Marble King factory was destroyed by Fire. The surviving machinery and equipment were soon moved to Paden City, WV., where Marble King operates to this day. Davis Marble Company Pennsboro, WV 1947 - 1948 A short lived venture built from the ground up. The Davis Marble Company successfully began producing swirl type marbles, to then find local marble prices were beginning to fall. In a tightening market with inflating operating costs, Davis was forced to close the doors. An excerpt from the history as described in "American Machine Made Marbles", explains in an effort to move product, ninety percent of their marbles were sold in a single transaction at a loss. That order shipped directly to Puerto Rico, leaving them much harder for U.S. collectors to find. The background photo shows the production building on the right. About the Club By Laws Board of Directors Membership Merchandise The West Virginia Marble Collectors Club (WVMCC) was the inspiration of four Wood County, West Virginia residents. These enthusiastic marble collectors were Ron Shepherd, Paula Shepherd, Gary Traugh, and the late Tim Wyer. They recognized a need to preserve the history of marbles and to promote the collecting and identification of marbles. The WVMCC was not intended to be limited to only West Virginia marble collectors or West Virgina marbles alone. The organization welcomes collectors from everywhere and appreciates every type of marble, including but not limited to, stone, clay, glass handmade, machine-made and contemporary, along with all related marble memorabilia. The WVMCC was organized on March 30, 2003, and is dedicated to educating individuals about the collecting and preservation of marbles, art glass orbs, related artifacts, and documents. The WVMCC promotes marble collecting through club meetings, marble shows, a website, a newsletter, and the development of other educational resources. The original club officers were as follows: President, Ron Shepherd; First Vice President, Dennis Jones; Second Vice President, Steve Pletcher; Secretary, Ruby Sellers; Treasurer, Lana Williamson; Public Relations Officer, Gary Traugh; Newsletter and Website Editor, Paula Shepherd; and Show Chairman, Steve Smith. The collecting of marbles is still a young hobby. It was the goal of the original founders of the WVMCC that through meetings, marble shows, newsletters and conversations/correspondence among marble enthusiasts, that additional information could be accumulated which would be beneficial to collectors. The logo chosen to represent the WVMCC was inspired by a contemporary sulfide marble created by the late Jim Davis of West Virginia. This marble depicted the shape of the State of West Virginia in a clear base marble. By Laws The association known as the West Virginia Marble Collectors Club (WVMCC) was organized on March 30, 2003. This association was not organized for the private gain of any officer, director, or member of the WVMCC. The WVMCC will remain a volunteer association dedicated to the collection, education and preservation of marbles, art glass orbs and related artifacts and documentation for the benefit of the public. WVMCC will promote marble and art glass orb collecting through club meetings, marble shows, web site, newsletter and development of other educational resources. The WVMCC will encourage marble games and tournaments among children. WVMCC will strive to have at least one event promoting marbles each year to be determined by the Board of Directors. II Membership in the WVMCC shall be open to any interested person who maintains status by proper payment of annual dues. Section 1. Annual Membership Dues - $30 *Effective May 9, 2004, Lifetime Memberships will no longer be offered. A provision is made, however, that individauls holding membership prior to May 8, 2004 may convert to lifetime membership if done by May 8, 2004. Section 2. Membership dues cover up to two people per household and runs 5/1-4/30 with renewals coming due May 1 each year. III The officers of the WVMCC will remain in office for two years. General elections will be held at the annual business meeting each year. No part of the net income or assets of this association shall ever be to the advantage or benefit of any officer. For the sake of preserving continuity within the association, the first President, Secretary and newsletter editor are initially elected for one year. Thereafter, they will serve two year terms. The officers of the association shall remain in office for two years unless a resignation has been received by the members of the board of directors or the spirit of these bylaws has been violated. Upon the resignation of any officer, the members of the board of directors will appoint a replacement by majority vote. All officers must be members of the WVMCC. Section 1. The President shall preside at business meetings and oversee and coordinate the functions of the association. The President shall oversee the functions of the officers, and directors (advisor positions eliminated by vote at annual meeting May 2008) of the association. Section 2. The First Vice-President shall help oversee and coordinate the finances of the association and aid the president in the operation of the association. Section 3. The Second Vice-President shall aid the president in the operation of the association. Section 4. The Secretary shall aid the President and Vice Presidents in the operation of the organization. The Secretary shall take and prepare minutes of all meetings. Section 5. The Treasurer shall coordinate the finances of the association. The Treasurer will be prepared to give a financial report at each business meeting. Section 6. The chairperson for the newsletter and website has the right to review and/or reject any material and or advertisements presented for publication in either venue. V The members of the Board of Directors will be the developers and fund-raisers for the organization. The Board will include the officers and committee chairpersons and advisors, each having one vote. The Directors will remain on the Board for the period of their elected office unless the officers have received a resignation, or the spirit of these bylaws has been violated, or are no longer members of the WVMCC. The Advisors will remain on the Board for a period of one year unless the officers have received a resignation, or the spirit of these bylaws has been violated, or are no longer members of the WVMCC. Upon the resignation of any officer or member of the board, the board will appoint a replacement by a majority vote. Section 1. The first year, Advisors will be appointed by the Board of Directors. Thereafter, they will be elected by members from their respective regions to represent and express the wishes of members from each region to the Board of Directors. VI Board members must be present at the business meetings to cast a vote or may mail their vote to the president (and cc the secretary) with receipt of mailed votes at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled business meetings. A quorum for business meetings of the Board of Directors shall be 2/3 of the board (either by physical presence or by votes mailed to the president/secretary) with all matters decided by a majority vote. VII There will be an annual business meeting at which all club members will have a vote on all business presented at this meeting. This is the only time the bylaws may be changed. VIII "In the event the West Virginia Marble Collectors' Club would ever be dissolved, all of its assets would be distributed to The West Virginia Museum of American Glass (Weston, WV)." Christensen Agate Another of the earliest in-house marble packaging companies. Being a short-lived company, very few variations were produced. One can find more variations of vintage Jobber boxes made from bulk Christensen Agate marble purchases. Being very rare and valuable, available examples to display here have not been handy, though with the help of our marble friends, we will be bringing you more as time permits. The Christensen Agate Company Originated in Payne, Ohio in 1925. However, the only known examples were later produced in Cambridge, Ohio, 1927 -1933. They are another of the early marble manufactures that initially made transitional, hand gathered style. Christensen Agate Co. marbles are one of the most highly sought after brands for not only rarity, but also for the sharp, vivid colors and patterns. They produced Slag types, Patch & Ribbon and Swirl types, some designated as Flames for obvious reasons. They are also known for the early frit application in the Guinea type, so named for the colorful Guinea birds often seen on the company grounds. Akro Agate Akro Agate is among the relatively few manufactures that managed the production and distribution of their own packaged marbles. Akro Agate, Akron, Ohio 1910 - 1914. Clarksburg, WV 1914 - 1951. Another of the early marble manufactures that initially made transitional, hand gathered style. It is unclear, but likely Akro did not produce their own marbles, but rather packaged and sold M.F. Christensen marbles until the move to Clarksburg, WV, where their first commercial production began. It was Akro Agate that was first to patent and use the fully automated process. Akro also introduced the exclusive 'Spinner cup' mechanism, creating the corkscrew pattern. Along with Corkscrews, Akro produced Solid, Glassie, Swirl and Patch types. As referenced below, a two-color opaque corkscrew is referred to as 'Prize name'. A three-color opaque corkscrew is referred to as 'Special'. For whatever reason, Akro corkscrews are the only marble with a consensus accepting a white base as a counted color.
