Stone and Clay Marbles

No one knows just how far back in time manmade marbles go. Evidence of stone and clay marbles has been found in historical and prehistoric cultural context from around the world.

Pueblo, Aztec, Minoan, Celtic, Mohenjo Daro, Roman, Egyptian, and evidence of ancient cave dweller use. A marble set was found in the burial of an Egyptian child dating 3000 BCE.

Examples seen here are largely, if not all, from the 19th and mid 20th centuries.
